Power-laws from critical gravitational collapse: The mass distribution of subsolar objects
نویسندگان
چکیده
Critical gravitational collapse and self similarity are used to probe the mass distribution of subsolar objects. We demonstrate that at very low mass the distribution is given by a power law, with an exponent opposite in sign to that observed at high-mass regime. We further show that the value of this low-mass exponent is in principle calculable via dynamical systems theory applied to gravitational collapse. Qualitative agreement between numerical experiments and observational data is good. astro-ph/0403336; CGPG-03/10-6

Universality of the subsolar mass distribution from critical gravitational collapse
Self-similarity induced by critical gravitational collapse is used as a paradigm to probe the mass distribution of subsolar objects. At large mass (solar mass and above) there is widespread agreement as to both the form and parameter values arising in the mass distribution of stellar objects. At subsolar mass there is still considerable disagreement as to the qualitative form of the mass distri...
متن کاملThe effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations
Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...
متن کاملWeek 5: More on Structure Formation
In CDM models, the power spectrum determines everything about structure in the Universe. In particular, it leads to what people refer to as “bottom-up” and/or “hierarchical clustering.” To begin, note that the power spectrum P (k), which decreases at large k (small wavelength) is psychologically inferior to the scaled power spectrum ∆2(k) = (1/2π2)k3P (k). This latter quantity is monotonically ...
متن کاملCritical gravitational collapse with angular momentum
Critical collapse in general relativity refers to phenomena that occur at the threshold, in the space of initial data, between data that lead to black hole formation (collapse) and those that do not. Regular initial data can be classified as supercritical or subcritical according to whether or not they form a black hole. We refer to the boundary between supercritical and subcritical data as the...
متن کاملThe Cosmological Mass Distribution Function in the Zel’dovich Approximation
An analytic estimation of the mass function for gravitationally bound objects is presented. We use the Zel’dovich approximation to extend the Press-Schecter analysis to nonspherical collapse. For the Zel’dovich approximation, the gravitational collapse along all three directions which will eventually lead to the formation of real virialized objects clumps occurs in the regions where the lowest ...
